Does anyone else notice a low whirling noise from their powersteering pump? More noticable when cold and if I try to turn suddenly I feel it bind while at a stop so I try not grab to quickly. Is it something about to go or just accept because of the bigger wheels?

Our Excursion's power steering pump recently displayed whining/buzzing symptoms so we flushed out the original fluid and the pump cleared up & seemed new again.

Suggest doing a fluid change/flush possibly?

Just a FWIW :dunno .... Before you resign to doing a flush ? ADD a bit more PS fluid, even the stick sez Full, turn yer wheels FULL left & right and "Bump" the wheel when it's full left & right a couple times. That tends to bleed any air out. Re-check the level.

A Flush is the way to go .... but that little trick works sometimes too. Especialy if you have "Big Tires".

It's Worth a Shot ?

That's a great idea and I prefer to start at the bottom and work my way up if possible. The powersteering is the only fluid I haven't flushed or replaced for this year so it's due, but I'm still going to kick the tire, Thanks :sweet

I flushed the fluid and it does make a difference, but there is still a bit of the whine and I need to kick the tires.

My problem is the power steering cap is popping off, losing fluid then whirring. The cap is plastic and the latches have permenate bends so it barely catches when turned to lock. My fear is if I replace the cap, the pressure might break the next weak link, the hoses. Cap has popped off 6 times now. 2002 7.3 crew short bed. 104,000 miles

I put new pumps and lines in both the F350 and Excursion. It got very loud in both.

I recall a Ford service bulletin out a while back on Excursions stating the lines were the reason for the steering noise.
