I normally don't get involved in tire threads/discussions, as I work for a major tire manufacturer/retailer..
but I've been chillin' here this morning and I ran across a couple threads that were "...[this] tire sux, but [that] tire is great..."
and I noted that the tires are both the same company/group...
so as accurately as I can remember.. here's the what I know about manufacturers owning what brands..
Bridgestone/Firestone
Bridgestone
Firestone
Truimph
LeMans
Cooper
Cooper
Hercules
Dayton

Sears Weatherhandler

Kelly
Fierce
Steelmark

Star (discontinued)
Monarch (co-brand, sold only at Discount Tire)
Pathfinder (co-brand)
Republic (to be discontinued 01/01/10)
Pacemark (to be discontinued 01/01/10)
Winston (discontinued)
Big A
Big O
Michelin
Michelin

BFGoodrich
UniRoyal
Liberator A/T
Sears Weather-something as well

then you have:
Sumitomo
Hankook
Kumho
Ortec/Ortec Source Group
makes Blue Streak products for Goodyear (agreement dissolved 08/01/09)
Nitto
Pirelli
Trellborg
Yokohama
who all make branded stuff,
private label stuff
and all make no-name, so-proud-of-it-there's-only-a-size-on-it stuff
note about Ortec:
a private investment firm hq'd in New Jersey, but all holdings (plants, suppliers, etc) are in China
you may remember a recall from last year where the Source Group Unit couldn't figure out who they bought stuff from or who they sold it to..
prompting the CPSC Chairman to state, "...they're called Product Safety "REGULATIONS," not "suggestions."
Get me the first two digits of the DOT number (two letters, two numbers, or a combination), I have a chart at work that gives the manufacturer and plant location.
