HELP!! My 01 SD died on the way home from work today. The check engin lite came on and it would hardly run. I used my Superchips tuner to check the codes and got two, a P0603 and a P1316. I then cleared the codes hoping it would run better but...it would barly run. I made it home and checked the codes again, the P0603 code was the only code being displayed. The code interpretation says "Internal Ctrl Mod KAM Error".
Now, what does this mean and what has to be done to fix the problem...
I hope somebody out there can help me.

I am a new Ford owner having had Toyotas since 1989. I have several friends with PS diesels and they have had great luck with them. I bought this 01 PS with 98000 miles two weeks ago after having a couple of my buddies look it over. Now this....the darn thing has let me down. I just hope this isn't going to be ana ongoing problem. Toyotas have ALWAYS been reliable and this is the first Ford I have ever owned.

P 1316 is an IDM code which could mean several things. One of which could be your UVC harness.

The P0603 is from the SCMT.

OK, what is the SCMT?? And what if anything can I do about it?
I'm not getting the 1316 anymore but, what is the UVC harness?
I'm not a dummy but I don't have a clue what these things are...

Hello Red Monkey, and Welcome to SSD.com. Glad that you found us, and glad you were able to get on home with your truck tonight. It's hot out there.
Someone should be able to tell you what's next to do on your truck. We got a bunch of ole sorry boys from AL on here, so just join the gang and be one of us. Sounds like you have a very low mileage truck there. Hope you enjoy it very much.

SCMT- Super Chips Micro Tuner

P0603 is harmless, it just means the KAM was turned off when you erased the stock program and installed the SCMT programs.

P1316 is the one causing your truck to run poorly. It could be caused by the UVC harness. UVC-under valve cover harness. The injectors on your motor are under the valve cover. The wiring that goes to them passes through the valve cover gasket/harness. Its a normal problem on these engines for the UVC to go bad. Usually when they do they can by easily identified by removing the oil filler cap on the passenger side valve cover and smelling it. They usually leave a trace of a burnt wire smell. That's the most common trouble to check first.

A few months ago I had a member come by my house with the same symptoms and same code, and it was found to be an injector had become unplugged and the truck was running on 7 cylinders. This is NOT common though. Check your UVC harness. It may sound complicated buts it's really not, they are rubber gaskets that use no sealant.

Your truck will be reliable don't worry, and welcome to the forum.

The yellow arrow points at the wiring that plugs into the UVC.
The yellow circle is the injector. The under the valve cover wiring looks to be removed already in this picture but it should give you a visual of what we're talking about.

Thanks for the info Bryan. If it is my UVC harness how do I fix it? Do I have to take the valve covers off? There's a LOT of 'turbo stuff' on top of the valve covers if they have to be removed.
I had an injector come unpluged on my 22RE Toyota off road truck once and my SD is running a LOT like the Yota did then.
I did the smell test and it does smell like 'burnt wires'. Now, how do I fix it?

You should only need to remove the intercooler tubes to get them off, 30 minutes tops for a rookie, ten minutes to put back on ( for IC pipes). The passenger side is a bit tricky but it does snake its way out. I would disconnect both batteries since there are exposed relays. Once they are off disconnect and inspect, look for arcing. You may get lucky and the harness just worked loose. Find out why is came loose, broken clip etc, and address it. I used some CRC electrical contact cleaner on the one I just repaired. If you do spray any kind of chemical on them, make sure you have a rag between the engine and what your spraying or the chemical will end up in your oil pan.

I feel a LOT better now, thanks a LOT!!! I'll jump on the job in the AM before it gets to H O T. If I have to replace a wire do I just splice it into the harness or tape up the arcing area? I hope I get lucky and the harness just worked loose.
I'm not a rookie, just a novice with anything other than a Toyota. I still feel 'kinda lost' with the SD. You guys loose me when you start using UVC, KAM, SCMT, etc. I guess it will take a little time to learn the SD lingo.
Thanks again Bryan.

You can get to it anytime by clicking on Technical Artcles WIKI on the top right of any page on this site. There's also alot of cheap and even free modification articles in there.

If the valve cover gasket is burned up then it may require a new one.
