Sometimes when I start the truck up and take off, the speedo doesn't work and the OD flashes. Turn the truck off, restart and it works fine. Gave code P0500 VSS error. What can I do about this?

The VSS is located in the top of the rear differnetial, it might have some crud caked up on it or it might just be going bad. Dump the fluid and take the cover off your rear end, clean it out, clean the VSS tip and refill with fresh gear oil. Or if that doesnt work, change the VSS.

yep
but depending on the age of said gear oil, it may be covered in little filings of steel and such

I would as stroker mentioned, change it out inspect rings gears and bearings, and clean the exciter ring in the ring gear. and add new lube and clean the vss sensor, its just a little mag pick up type thingy, they usually go crazy from built up crap on em or you knock em off.:D

yes you do. its very confusing
sterling axles, ford, and who knows on mine.
thats why i say to check your axle code with with your ford part guy or at least napa, and then some say do not add the friction modifier
did i mention pulling your hair out :D

I would cimb under the truck and read the real tag, to see if you have a LS axle, then go from there,

mine is LS but it aslo has synthetic from the factory,
and then some others with 4.10s got syn from the factory so i think its a crap shoot, built on friday thing :D
