What difference does different weight oil make?
Reason I ask.. Up until last winter, I always used Rotella T 15W40. During the winter last year, I noticed that under hard acceleration, something was slipping. RPMs did increase, but no speed was gained. OK..I figured it's probably the torque converter...but I wasn't sure.
Sometime during the early spring, I started using Mystik JT8 15W50. I noticed that the slippage disappeared, but didn't link it to using different weight oil.
When this winter hit, I went back to using 15W40, and the slip came back. I thought it must be weather related, or some part shrinking because of the cold weather, just didn't know what. Well, today, I changed oil again, but went back to 15W50, and the slip seems to have gone away again. What difference could the oil play in the scenario? Maybe the heavier 15W50 makes the engine work a little tougher, keeping it from producing the power at a fast enough rate to make the TC slip?
