What difference does different weight oil make?

Reason I ask.. Up until last winter, I always used Rotella T 15W40. During the winter last year, I noticed that under hard acceleration, something was slipping. RPMs did increase, but no speed was gained. OK..I figured it's probably the torque converter...but I wasn't sure.

Sometime during the early spring, I started using Mystik JT8 15W50. I noticed that the slippage disappeared, but didn't link it to using different weight oil.

When this winter hit, I went back to using 15W40, and the slip came back. I thought it must be weather related, or some part shrinking because of the cold weather, just didn't know what. Well, today, I changed oil again, but went back to 15W50, and the slip seems to have gone away again. What difference could the oil play in the scenario? Maybe the heavier 15W50 makes the engine work a little tougher, keeping it from producing the power at a fast enough rate to make the TC slip?

The torque converter does not have anything to do with the weight of oil you use in the engine. It is part of the transmission. Generally you would use a lighter oil in winter, say 5W40 in winter, and 15W40 in summer. I run 5W40 all year round SYNTHETIC Oil. I had the romps in the winter and using 5W40 SYN oil cured that.

I dont see the correllation between the weight of oil used in your crankcase and what you may think is a slipping TC.

Bump...

Don't mean to hijack this thread, but I have the same sorta issue. When its cold, it seems that my TC doesn't lock like is should. Very similar to the above issue. I have to go about 2 or three miles, before it "acts" right, and then I come to a complete stop, and start off again.

I might add that I have my truck plugged in when its this cold 20* F..;)
Anyway, its cold for me...

Any ideas out there???

Thanks, RoReRi

Its a Jasper rebuilt. The first Jasper died at about 9 months old and this one is the replacement one. Its only about 4 months old.

I have not had it serviced since it was installed.

Thanks!

Do these appear to be lock up issues?? The ECM will not allow the unit to go into lockup until the unit warms up some.

This could be the issue, but this is my second winter with my one and only diesel, and I just don't know. and its why I'm asking.

Thanks for all the input

uhhhhmm
yep ecm/pcm logic will not let the tc lock if certain tranny temps are not met...

since its colder out now in some parts of the world this could it... however, your valve on the oil cooler lines could be jammed from debris or just not working which would allow a boat load of fluid to have to be heated up before tc lock up would happen.
99, some 00 and 01 and yep 02 had issuse with the cooler temp control vavle at teh tranny out put line on the tranny itself...
check intellidog for teh exact wording and tsb numbers.... who know you have a simple fix of changing the temp thingy...
hope it helps

100 percent on the pcm logic not letting the tc lockup with cold oil. The only corelation I can see with the engine oil is that I think this has to do with Engine oil temp, not tranny temp.

As for the valve I don't think that applies to the 94-97 e4od's, but I could be mistaken.
