Oil Pan Rust

Recently, I saw the TSB on the oil pan rust corrision problems with the Powerstroke oil pans. Of course my 2002 was starting to display signs of rusting. I have also read in order to replace the oil pan you must remove the engine and let oil pan seal cure for 24 hours.

Well, I see Ford recommended the Ford Anti-Corrision material PM13A to fix the problem. I purchased the bottle of PM13A from the dealer $22.00 and followed the TSB directions. I brushed a few coats of the anti-corrision stuff all over the oil pan. It reminded me of liquid tar in a way. I must say I was actually impressed with the results so far it kinda looked like the spray in bed liner material but smoother in texture when it dried a few minutes later. I let my truck set for about 12 hours to ensure no problems. I still have about 2/3 of a bottle in case. Sorry for the long post just wanted to share the information.

Thats interesting didnt know that ford made something. Can it actually be used with already exsiting rust or is just a preventative?
i just coat mine with used oil at every oil change.

The TSB recommended to use a de-gresser to clean the pan then use #36 grit with a grinder, then wipe the pan again before applying the PM13A.

I did the following instead (my choice)

Took a wire wheel attached to my drill going over the rust spots knocking off most of the rust. Wiped pan with a de-gresser, let dry a few minites, then wiped with a clean dry rag. Applied four coats of PM13A (using a small type cheap paint brush) took only a few minutes as it dried quickly but I did brush each coat over the entire oil pan just for good measure. I liked the end result pan looked good.

Honestly, I feel when Ford reports TSB's such as this they should offer to repair the problem. It shows good faith on their part and will keep customers as re-peat customers.

One of my buddy's actually cleaned it down with a wire wheel, sanded it, and fiberglassed it with a boat repair kit. Looks like crap, but that was about 4 years ago and no leaks.

Luckily mine never leaked, I just wanted to be proactive. glad your friends repair worked out. The reason I went with the Ford product PM13A is it withstands high temps.

The oil method should help, I did that until applying the PM13A. I was surprised how easy and fast it was. I'll crawl under there again in March when I cahnge the oil and oil filter to see how it looks.
