In my 2000 X the oil pan was totally rusted. The guys that usually do my oil change had not mentioned anything. I could have found an easier solution, if would have known in early stage.
It had BAD rust spots in the front part of the pan as well. The worst was in the deep part. I was first thinking of cutting the deep part of and replace it with the part from a new pan. But as it was so rusty, I had to replace it. I cut part of the crossmember. To the back of the big hole, took the turbo off, eased the engine bolts and lifted the engine a bit. The pan came out with a bit of turning. And the new one in.
Only problem was, the hole in the radiator, that I broke during the process. Hopefully the shop gets it fixed today, so I get the X back to work.

What a hassle with one oil pan. Thanks Ford

don't know what you're grousing about, we've been changing oil pans on 5.Slows and 300 I-6s for years because they rusted through... :dunno

what did you do about repairing the crossmember, out of curiosity?

Hey all. Dumb question:
Why do they rust? It seems from under the paint.

Cutting the cross member, wow, Finn! Did you weld a new chunk 'o steel on it?

Hello Gentlemen

I cut a piece off from the crossmember. When you look at the crossmember from below, there is a big hole in the middle, almost in the middle, I cut from both ends of the hole backward. I did not want to cut the whole crossmember. Would have been easier though. I welded ( mig ) the same piece back.
I got the radiator fixed and everything on place yesterday. Changed steering pump oil while had to be under there. All the filters changed as well.
So far seems ok.

No way of safely sanding off the rust and shooting a couple coats of high temperature paint onto the surface? I'd try and re-protect it first before attempting to replace the bugger ;tu

You have to catch it early to do that. I am thinking of taking a wire brush to mine and coating it with POR 15 and then shoot it with some VHT.

the powdercoat finish will lift and let moisture underneath it.. the pan then rusts away, under the finish..
