So I'm changing my oil this past weekend. I have a gallon of Rotella 15w-40, a quart of Motorcraft 15-40, so I buy 2 gallons of Castrol Tection on sale at Sprawl-mart. Its all sitting in the driveway while I chip away at the "Honey-Do" jar to keep the peace. 3 hours of 90 degree weather later, I change the oil. I can't help but notice the Motorcraft oil is dark, like maple syrup, but flows out nicely. The Castrol oil [which I've never tried] is a little lighter in color and also flows nicely. The Rotella is very light in color and takes forever to pour even at a very warm temperature. Is the new formula for the new engines different? I haven't used it in a while and it seems like its real thick. Almost Lucas thick. Anybody else notice this?

Don't know about the Castrol or Motorcraft, I don't use them. But, I do use Rotella 15w-40 and haven't noticed any difference in the old oil and the new. I have several 1 qt bottles of the 'old Rotella' and usually buy the 1gal containers as needed so they are the new formula and I can't tell a difference in thickness. I have never seen a 15w-40 motor oil 'as thick as Lucus', that's honey thick!

It is normally best to stick with one brand rather than mixing. I would have to venture to say that the Rotella will hold up better to heat as where the other two would be better for a cold start-up.

Yeah, thats the conclusion I reached. I mix oil all the time, to be truthful. Whatever is left-over from the last change or 2 gets used. Just seemed odd. If it was all the same stuff, I wouldn't have noticed.

Mixing brands is not the best practice because the additive systems in each may be different and when mixed may not function as efficiently as desired.
