I been having this annoying oil leak from the drivers side valve cover which I'm assuming is the gasket has given up.

My question is who has had the 7.3L valve cover gaskets go and are they the old style cork or steel core silicone type as I haven't had the covers off yet and haven't seen em off yet on at least the 99-up 7.3's :D

I wonder how much of a pain in the butt the gaskets are to change:dunno

Bill,

If your 02 7.3 is like my 95 7.3 (and I think in this respect it is) the VC gasket is an O-ring that is integral to the UVC harness.

Would it be more trouble for me to replace it in the driveway than take it to the dealer truck shop for it to sit there a week and have them cause more problems when they get to it?

Have you heard of many other 7.3 owners with same/similar valve cover issue?

Hi Bill, Just another thing to maybe look at first. Cuz it's on the driver side, Take a look at the 2 "O" rings between the CCV filter thingy and yer valve cover. Easy to get to..... Remove the intake, 2 10mm bolts on the CCV ventury, 2 phillips screws on the filter thingy.... take a look.

The only reason I say this is, I thought I had a VC leak. Did the above... it was the CCV "O" rings. Oil would drain, seap past the seal (s), run down the VC flange, get all over everything... make'n it look like a VC thing... it was'nt.

:dunno

oil leak

I was looking at the Haynes manual and it says to replace the ccv O rings every time you remove the ccv housing. I'm going to check mine in the morning. I know when I had it off a few weeks ago the O rings were swollen larger than the groove they fit in. I just cleaned everything with brake clean and glued the O rings in place with hi temp silicone. Mine started leaking on the turbo pedistal. I noticed it when i was rechecking the fittings on the exhaust for the ccv mod. I took her in for the warranty repair and she wouldn't leak for them.

If i remember correctly, the biggest pain is getting all teh junk out of the way, alt, intake hose. while you have all the stuff pulled back look at the HP lines real good. ours started out of the blue leaking at the HP pump outlet, I it was spewing up and the light stuff was dripping off. I thought i had blown a rear main, pretty much washed teh entire engine down with oil before i got home
i miss my 7.3:sweet really
