So it was finally time to change the oil in my PSD for the first time. I got everything I need, or so I thought. As it turns out I forgot to bring forty rolls of paper towels and some smarts.
Lucky for me, the navy has a place to use that has lifts. Makes it easy to get the oil changed. Raised it up and pulled the plug. Never saw an oilt plug directly on the bottom. The last ones I had where poking out of the side. Now that's enineering! But lo and behold, that stuff came out fast. I was beginning to wonder if the bucket on the stand was going to hold four gallons of this stuff. It did...by an inch.
Well where the heck is the oil filter. Didn't bother to find it before I started. Had to climb up into the truck to get the manual. Oh, its on top of the engine...Guess I'll put the plug back in.
Took out the old filter and put the new one in. Wanted to find out what size socket it would take so back to the owners manual. It said, "Don't put the plug in until the filter is back on." OK, guess I'll lift it back up and pull the plug first. I forgot where it said,"Make sure to let the oil drain out before putting in the new filter." So when the plug came out, so did about a quart of oil all onto the ground. Oh SH$$!! There is no dry sweep stuff so I just put about 10 shop rags over it and cleaned it up. What a mess.
Dropped the truck, put the filter in, tightened er up, raised the truck, put in the plug, lowered the truck and filled it with brand new oil.
Now for the old. There is no tank to dump it in. you have to pour it into a box full of absorbant and dispose of it that way. Well I got the 15 quart one, that's just what I need. As it turns out I don't know if it holds 15 because one was already spilled all over and another 2 or so was about to get spilled. The absorbant is supposed to hold 15 quarts but I don't think they meant for it to poured in all in about 2 minutes. Also, a free standing plastic bag doesn't make a good bucket. And before I knew it, oil was everywhere. I think I did more cleaning up than actual oil changing. Well at least I have a few lessons learned for next time.
