shorted fuel bowl heater (disconnected)

12* above zero temps

cold start, short warm-up (2 minutes)

35 mph, surging, bogging & unresponsive to throttle (no, not the EBPV surge, that one I'm familiar with)
this was like a "my fuel pump is crapping out and I'm going lean" surge

CEL on, ICP above/below desired

runs fine when warmed up.

-edit- chip in "stock" position

this heap didn't just come >< that close to gelled fuel, did it?

yep sounds like what I've heard for gelled fuel but since the SD does not have a return the fuel in the tank would still be cold but if it was pulling enough gel from the tank then the engine would warm it up once it got to the engine bay.

I'm not too sure that that gelling fuel would give you a CEL. :dunno

But the ICP code might be pointing at something else.

A while back, I experienced a loss of power myself on several occasions. This typically happened when the engine was warming but still not fully up to temp. But when I did experience that loss of power, the sound of the engine changed. It sounded like the injectors got quieter. I guessed it might be the IPR. I got an "O"-ring kit to service the IPR. I took out the IPR, disassembled it, cleaned and re-installed it with the new "O"-rings. Problem hasn't re-occured since.

When the problem did occur, I never did get a CEL. The problem would come & go within 5 to 10 seconds and not reoccur until the next cold start.

on edit: Here's another thought, is it possible you might have had some water/ice in the fuel? If you're like me, I can't remember the last time I drained the fuel bowl. When I had to replace the fuel pump, I put in a spin-on style filter/water separator upstream of the pump to protect it. Prior to that I would sometimes have a kicking/bucking issue, typically after filling the tank. Never happened again after the filter install.

that's what I was thinking..
I think I got the CEL because it essentially ran out of fuel (was just thick enough the pump couldn't keep up with the demand) due to a cold engine (cold engines require an exponentially greater amount of fuel)..

guess I'll have to spring for two bottles of Power Service per tank until either
A. I get a new fuel bowl heater
B. The calendar says "April"

Just FWIW, what did your fuel gauge say at the time?

1/4 tank or less maybe??
