Just how do you take pictures in the dark? Some of you were wanting some more Alaska pictures so last night I took these about 50 miles north of the Arctic Circle. As you can see they did not turn out at all. The lights were spectacular last night but the pictures look like a glow in the dark smudge on a piece of black paper:dunno

What kind of camera are you using................???

Using a tripod and a real slow shutter speed should help.

Nikon Coolpix 5600(cheap digital). I have no idea if there is a shutter speed adjustment on it? Guess I better try and find the book. I know how to point and shoot, thats it..

Is the flash turned off...............???

With the flash off and in auto mode it will hold the shutter open alot longer.............but the camera needs to be rock steady. High pixel setting might help too.

I saw the northern lights up there in the 70's and it was awsome. I don't have any experience photographing them though.

Yes flash was off and the shutter stayed open a long time. I was holding it on the window sill, almost like a tripod.

We've got a Nikon Coolpix 2100 (even cheaper). It does okay, but I don't think you can adjust the speed on it. Makes you wish for a 35mm with 100 or 200 film. :D

My oldest son's girlfriend just got a big Canon that looks just like their old 35mm's. She has two lenses, one that will go up to 300mm. I am going to find the model number and try to get one on e-bay. We had one about 20 years ago (a Pentax 35mm with a 200mm lense) that would get some darn good closeups from a long way off.

Hope you can get some good shots of the aurora borealis (spelling?). We've seen them here in Northeast Texas, but it's been awhile. Was out in our yard one night talking to some neighbors when they looked up and said "What's on fire?" They saw the red sky, and we decided it was the "Northern Lights".
