No oil pressure

I am reposting this from the 911 forum as i have seen no responces there. Please read the first post to understand a little about what is going on.
96 7.3 E-350 conversion


So far I have reassembled the engine enough to crank over and recheck everything. With the oil cooler disconneted I can crank the engine over and get a good flow of oil. I built a plate to block the pump discharge with a gauge plumbed in to the plate. I crank the engine with 0 psi. I ordered a new oil pump with housing. Ford sent me the internal oil pump parts and the whole aluminum front cover $500+ . Looking at the new front cover i found two oil pump discharge ports that go directly into the block bypassing the cooler and the filter. These ports both about 3/4 in diameter are not on any of the lubrication drawings that i have. Anyone that knows about them care to share a little info with me. thanks.

I saw your original post in the 911 section, I just dont have an answer for your problem. Im not sure how it is on the E-series, but on the F-series, front cover (oil pump work) removal means engine removal.

I see you're here too...

The only port that bypasses the filter I'm aware of goes to the HPOP reservoir. There is a valve that should shut it off once the pressure builds in the main oil galley. Even if there was a problem there it shouldn't cause no oil pressure.

Someone had a problem awhile back where there was some sort of bleed on the timing cover above the pump that had come out. Since you replaced the cover I wouldn't think thats the problem.

Haven't had one of these apart far enough to give you a good place to look.

My suggestion (what I would do) is drop the pan, then with air pressurize the system through the port on the side of the rear cooler header. Then look for severe leaks

oil pan removal

On this E series you can drop the oil pan enough to remove the pickup tube if you take the air intake and the turbo off, remove the motor mounts and lift the front of the engine witha cherry picker. You get just enough clearance to get your hand in the pan to remove the one nut holding the tube about mid may back. Took a little time to figure that one out.

I am looking for the valve that you are talking about for the hpop. that shuts with main rail oil pressure. I am guessing interal but a specific location would be nice. thanks

The valve, I've only seen mentioned in the manual. I think it's in the oil passage near the HPOP reservoir. However, even if it failed it shouldn't cause low pressure as the HPOP res is under pressure too.

With the volume these pumps put out, there would have to be a pretty significant leak to lose all pressure. I'd still say quickest way is pressurize the system with the pan off. A leak that big should be obvious.

Problem Found

I mentioned that i recieved a new front cover from Ford but had not replaced yet. I talked with the local IH dealer about the threaded port in the back of the new cover. After a lot of looking it is listed as an aireation valve. JOAT mentioned that this valve had come out in a previos thread. Well that is the problem with this one. I installed the new front cover with the new valve that comes with it. Ford cost for valve $41 IH cost $6.71 Thanks for everyones help.

And yes the engine is blocked up when I work on it. I wouldn't be able to do much with only one hand.

Glad you found the problem!
