These oil spills are getting to be way too common. Seems like it may be time to start updating things a little. This leaky pipe is 40 years old and I bet it wasn't designed to be there over 20. The Alaska pipeline up here is way past its planned lifespan. Seems like the oil companies would start updating before they get shut down which would be real bad deal for us oil burners.

Back in the days when I did industrial hearing testing, Enbridge pipeline was one of our clients. Every year I'd start off in Thief River Falls, MN and follow the pipeline across MN, WI, IN, da U.P. and downstate MI going to every maintenance station. It'd would take me about two weeks to get them all done. Some clients we had I hated going to. But I enjoyed seeing the Enbridge folks each year and actually miss my visits. There were a couple of employees who passed away over the years. I remember the sadness I felt when I would learn of the loss of those good folks.

The people who maintain/repair the pipelines get paid very well. But it's feast or famine thing as far as work load. When everything is good, I'd think "I want a job here"!! But when they have a break or leak somewhere, it isn't just the local guys trying to fix the problem. They dispatch extra help from all over. And they get worked for not hours at a stretch, but days.

The pipeline and oil spill is a very bad situation. They just commented on the news that high water from recent rains is making the situation more difficult. But I know the good people personally who are now getting very dirty to fix it. I know they're bustin' ass right now literally to the point of exhaustion to get it fixed.

well, this morning, the County park on the river at the end of my road is closed..
EPA and MDNRE are using the park buildings as a command site.. they laid a mile or so of boom across Morrow Lake from there..
they said last night if they can't stop it there, they wont be able to try again until Lake Allegan because of the swiftness of the current..

now there are more concerns..
the original spill was reported at 365,000 gallons..
latest estimate from Enbridge is 850,000
EPA estimates upwards from 1,000,000

Oil spill in Kalamazoo River | MLive.com
this morning, the oil sheen has breached Morrow dam, where officials had hoped to halt it..
the Superfund money may be in jeopardy (paper mill waste), as the EPA was reported to have called the oil cleanup "good enough" for both purposes..
no "fund" is planned to compensate businesses along the river (Shady Bend campground, Augusta canoe livery, and various farming operations that use the river for irrigation water)...

I'm not trying to slam Enbridge, but the right-wing conspiracy theorist in me sees something that I can't discuss here due to forum rules.. PM me if you want details.. it's two-pronged

Seems to me with the extremely high unemployment rate in my home state that there would be thousands of folks at the ready to do whatever it takes to get this cleaned up before it gets too far. My mom and sister are down from Michigan right now. They say that work is still very, very hard to find. Obama wants to create jobs well, here ya go.

We are killing this planet day after day after day......
