I am new to this forum. What a great resource. Thanks. I recently purchased a 97 PSD and had a few questions
It has 142,000 miles. Seems to be in good shape. Previous owner kept up with maintenance. I am getting about 13 mpg. I thought it should be better. Also the brake pedal fades and seems spongy. It stops ok but the pedal is nearly to the floor. Pads and shoes seem ok.
What are some things I can do to fix these problems

Bleed the brakes and get fresh brake fluid in the system.

Welcome to the site. If new brake fluid doesn't fix it you might need a new master cylinder. As far as the 13mpg that is a little low. Check the air filter and fuel filter for starters. When you get a chance fill in the signature line below your posts so we know what you have, for example if the truck has 40" tires it would explain the mpg. If you go to the quick links near the right top of the screen there is a link in there to edit your signature.

Welcome to the site. If you can keep your foot off the go pedal, a chip, gauges, and exhaust will improve your economy. Bryan

Howdy,
Welcome to a great source of information. I had the same problem with the brakes on my truck, when it was all said and done I had to replace the RABS. It is on the drivers frame rail by the firewall. But I did have to replace the master cylinder as well. Shop around for prices, the RABS was kind of pricey at 150.00 +/- 10.00 bucks.
Take Care,
Craig
as well
