Hey guys. I'm new to diesels, although I've been doing a little research on them and I've decided that my next truck will be a Ford powerstroke of some flavor.

I don't plow, I don't have anything to tow (yet..toys coming later hopefully), and don't really have anything that requires a diesel...but I have a wife and two little boys and as a result a whole CRAPLOAD of stuff, so I need the utility and the capability to move that stuff around. Plus, I like having the ability to go somewhat fast when I need to, and I've driven a few of the newer powerstrokes... The term "rocketship" comes to mind, and they were bone stock as far as I know. Of course, the tired 5.3 gasser in my 2000 Yukon isn't exactly a race motor, lol. We travel through the mountains quite a bit on our way out to utah/nevada/california for various vacations and family visits, and with the 5.3 you either have to let off the gas and coast, or floor it, force the motor to rev like crazy, and accelerate well past the speed limit - this is dangerous in the mountains, but as soon as you let off, the motor downshifts and you're coasting again. It's impossible for it to maintain a constant speed. -mad I doubt any respectable diesel would have quite as much trouble with that. Am I wrong? Even so, I love the fact that you can make so much power with them. I don't intend to go crazy, but a decent intake, programmer and exhaust would suit me just fine.

Anyway, I'm hoping to learn a great deal here, and I'm looking forward to becoming an active member of the community. Now, I'm sure the 7.3 vs 6.0 has been asked about 10,000 times on here, so I'll consult the powers of google-fu before diving into the powerstroke forums and actually asking. ;tu

Thanks, Bush! I was poking around and looking at some of the links in your sig...very impressive stuff! And very functional/innovative/DIY-friendly! I especially love the V1 install. That, my friend, is SLICK!

Thanks again for the welcome guys. Unfortunately I'm a wee bit upside down on my Yukon, so I'm afraid that it will be a decent while before I can afford another truck. However, I intend to use as much of that time as I can to research the different PSDs out there and decide which one is right for me. I hope that this is the last truck I buy for a LONG time. I'm confident that if I do my part, the truck will do the same.

Great looking rigs you guys have in your avatars, by the way! Cant wait to get one of my own.

Welcome to the site. Glad you found us. With the rebates and discounts on the new PSD's, you might be okay even with your negative equity. Some dealers can really do a good job in helping a guy out. Others will take you to the cleaners.

For someone with a little cash to set aside for a down payment and a little better credit than me, I'm sure that would be a great scenario, but alas, I'm stuck with no funds and only so-so credit. Besides, I've decided in the last few days that I'd much rather get my hands on a tried and true 7.3L PSD...the 6.0 and 6.4 engines look impressive on paper, but thats about it in my eyes. I wouldn't mind a 6.0 if I hadn't been hearing so many horror stories about them...but this is the last truck I plan on buying for a very, very long time, so if I can squeeze 250K miles out of one, I'll be very happy. I don't mind plunking down some money for a beefed up 4R100, since well used 99-02 7.3L PSDs with 100-120K miles on them seem to being going for $17-$19K in the Denver area...not too bad. By the time I dump the Yuke and am ready to buy a PSD, they'll be even less.
