Just picked up the 2005 F250 that O5SuperDuty had for sale yesterday to replace my F-150. (http://www.superdutydiesel.com/forums/trucks-sale/14693-2005-f250-sale.html). :D

The pictures really don't do it justice - he kept it absolutely spotless! Ran perfectly too...up until about 100 miles from home (Brooklyn, MD) and then wouldn't restart after we stopped for a quick dinner. :( Cranks fine, but sets DTC P2291 for low ICP pressure when cranking (reads ~230 while cranking according to AE). One tow to Bob Bell Ford later and there it sits, waiting for a tech to take a look...whenever they might get around to it. Here's hoping it's covered under the 5/100,000 warranty!

On the plus side, guess I've got plenty of time to read through the forums and learn all about my first diesel!

WELCOME !

Based on the Model year and SYMPTOM I'd guess that you need
the HPOP TSB(s) performed...you should be covered under the
5yr/100k ($100 dollar deductible) transferable warranty

The minimum oil pressure required by the the injectors from the
HPOP is 500psi...500psi is needed to fire the injectors & start
the engine (max psi is just shy of 4000psi).

Affected model years are 2005-2007.

Read the following TSB's in order to build your knowledge and confirm
the problem (you may also have to share this info w/ your servicing dealer...
especially the last one...since its an INTERNATIONAL part, not a ford part.)

As a background...FDDTS- ICP Leaks Trouble Shooting

what i suspect to be your problem --> FDDTS - HPOP Connector Bracket

there has (since the Connector BRACKET TSB) been a revision
to the connector -->FDDTS - New One-Piece High Pressure Oil Connector

some additional "light" reading & diagrams regarding the ICP can
be found --> Page 41: Fuel Management System

Thanks guys!

I'd read through the HPOP TSB stuff before and am thinking that's likely the cause - although I was pretty limited in the diagnostics I could perform in the IHOP parking lot. Also, keep in mind my mechanical experience is entirely from gas engines so I'm learning as I go. Ran perfectly up until then - great mileage (~19mpg at 65-70), no smoke, and smooth idle. Had started and stopped a number of times on the drive with no problems. Oil was recently changed and was Rotella 15W40 - showed exactly full.

Oasis showed the only major work done was a EGR cooler replacement at around 36,000 miles. Truck is stock except for a K&N filter, which I had planned on replacing before taking in to the dealership. Of course, that didn't have a chance to happen. Hoping they don't try to void any warranty coverage because of it!

theres no rhyme or reason when the HPOP (connection) fails....
some experiance increasingly longer crank (to start) times...others
have had it die while running down the road...and most of the failures
have been like yours...wont pressurize (cause the .95qt in the hpop
reservoir has either drained back or cant be filled).

Finally got the truck back yesterday! :yahoo

Looks like I had most of the common problems all at once. HPOP fitting failed, along with the branch tube and IPR. Metal in the pump, so they replaced it as well.

In addition, they found a new problem I was unaware of - degas bottle was empty and had oil residue (was at correct level ~ 150 miles prior to final stop). Oil cooler was plugged, which took the EGR cooler out with it. I now have a new EGR cooler, Oil Cooler, Coolant intake, and screen as well. Second time that's happened, although looking back over the oasis I ran before I bought it appears that only the EGR cooler was replaced last time.

All covered under warranty after the $100 deductible...thank God!

man im TELLIN' ya its GOT to be the damm stop-leak/casting sand thats
in their from the factory thats plugging up these oil coolers !

fatal mistake is that the previous mechanic only replaced what was broken
(egr cooler) and didnt take the time to diagnose the problem (plugged oil cooler)....
so ford factory paid to have that job done TWICE !

sounds like another great example of why owners should install
COOLANT FILTERS from the moment they take delivery of their trucks !
