I just bought my first diesel (2004 f250 4x4). The first thing I did was get the oil and fuel filters changed and wow $160.00! $70.00 for fuel filters! How often should I change these fuel filters? I will be doing very little towing and off roading.

Welcome aboard Jimmy! Congrats on the new truck:thumbs

Yes the 6.0L fuel filter set is up there abit but you're getting a heck of an engine:sweet

One of our advertisers PowerStrokeShop stocks the OEM set for about $50,the fuel filter changing intervals I'll assume is around 10,000 miles but I'll let the 6.0L guys chime in:cool:

Again welcome and come back often:)

wecome to the best place.
as for teh cost of having filters changed.... hmmm.. you spent to much
my book says every 15k, some years the interval is different, dotn know why.
i am at 11k and been through two sets already due to bad fuel water sand etc.
so I would recommend you drain the fuel filer at least once every two weeks for a few times, then if its still coming out clean, then once a month drain some out to check for garbage. some will say thats to often but, where I am at we get a lot of sand in the fuel -mad
the new improved drain valve set up makes this a easy no mess ordeal. the powerstroke shop has em for about 15 buckaroos if i remember correctly.
filters are $$ so shop around, powerstroke shop has good $$ for them and as always you can ask for a lower price, i get mine as part of a package with my bypass filters so its a few dollars less then most places, but only as a package deal.
still only save about 5 green things.

If you think it sounds nice now, wait until you put a 4" exhaust on it and open up the intake a bit. I get that "oh-so-special" feeling when I'm driving and romp on the loud pedal since it sounds so good.:thumbs :thumbs

Welcome to SDD, it's the best site around. Congrats on your new truck, you're going to love it. If you're like me, one of the first things you'll do is figure out a way to maintain it properly, but cheaply. You're looking at $500 every 15k for a dealership service....I got smart on my X and started doing everything myself. You can save a lot of money that way.

Filters...well, do some research and you'll find a bunch of places selling the right filter for you. The best place to start is by reading through the posts here and find out what type of fuel, air, oil, etc filters you want, then find out where you can get them the cheapest. www.filter1.com has both fuel filters for $37 (last time I bought them).

If you shoot me a PM I'll send you the spreadsheet I use to track the maintenance on my truck. I just rolled the owners manual, ford website, and common sense maintenance in one chart.

Again, welcome to SDD.

Bruce
