I just put in my 170cc DIY injector kit and Tony made me a 4 page chip....
my question is how much boost can the stock turbo make and still be OK....
...like right now on poisition 2,3,4 the 35psi boost gauge I have gets pegged out and the turbo starts to chug......
...So I know that I need to get a bigger turbo now but what's the SAFE Max pressure for the factory turbo....

Thanks,

Carl

PSI is pretty much RPM dependant. Max pressure isn't so much a problem for the turbo, but exceeding the safe RPM can be(tho actaul RPM is hard to determine). If you overspin it and it grenades the compressor, the debris goes into the engine (Bad). No worries if it's the turbine that goes. I don't know the exact RPM where it's a problem, but at a guess I'd say they were designed to give somewhere around 25-30 psi max in our trucks. Most guys I know making over 30 have already changed or modded the turbo tho. Someone more knowledgable in this area will be along soon with the max safe boost/rpm.

When my turbo got trashed a couple months ago, I was told that the Max the stock turbo would take was 25 psi. It would take more as I do know hitting 35 psi several times. but it won't take the abuse too long.
Had not confirmed that figure with Garrett but I have my chip turned down so I don't boost over 25psi anymore till I can afford to upgrade my new stock turbo to something that I know will take the abuse.

Rule of thumb is if you are going to continually operate over 25 psi you can count on eating thrust bearings. The stocker on our trucks just isnt built for it. It rolls on brass bushings and the thrust brg is nothing more than a glorified brass washer. I've rebuilt my stocker once already.
