I have a 2000 7.3L ford 4x4 diesel w/ 178000 miles on it. I was riding down the road and smelled diesel. To my dismay there was fuel dumping on the ground. I got it back to my store and saw that the leak was coming from what appears a fuel line on the top left of the engine. It is directly uinderneath the place where the exhaust leaves the manifold. I am by no means a mechanic so i was just wondering if anyone has had this happen t them and if it is an easy or difficult fix?

Driver's side or passenger's side?

Is the leak coming from a fitting or from a break in the line itself? There are a couple of hold-down straps (not really straps, though--they look like a number "9" with a bolt through the tail of the 9) and they've been known to wear a hole in the fuel line itself through vibration and age...

Yep it is passengers side under turbo. I went out there and felt where it is coming out of break in the fuel line. How do you fix this? do you order new fuel line or can you patch? What about getting to it to fix it?

My .02 is: REPLACE IT. It's not that hard to do.. If you have a set of Crows Feet wrenches. You say yer not a Mech ? If not, get the replacement line and take it to a good local shop... FORD will abuse you with parts & labor.

If you wana tackel it yerself, I'm sure folks on here can (including myself) could walk you thru it.

I am going to definitely tackle myself. I am about to get some 5/16" tubing and comp couplings. I am going to cut line up near fuel filter and bend around to he back before the line turns down behind engine. If you guys have any advice please let me know. It seems that it will be pretty tough to replace a small section where it is leaking snce it is so tight. It is leaking right on the bracket that keeps it from vibrating.

Just be sure you get HIGH PRESSURE >STEEL< fuel line and the proper fittings and O rings. Again just my .02 but I would get the replacement PART, by part number, with the replacement O rings, by part number.

You can.. Most times save some bucks by getting the parts from IH.

Replace'n that fuel line is one of those: do it ONCE & do it RIGHT.

how do you get that dang nut off of the back side of the fuel line? I cannot figure out how to get that one off. I was going to try and patch it but after all of this I think that I am going to order the part. Where do you recommend getting and it and what are some tips on installing? What is IH?

IH is International, who makes the engine. Find your local dealer and they should have the part.

If you remove the Engine Lift Ring, it'l give you more work'n room.

an angled tubeing wrench will work. Or...

Cut the old line, >OR<, slip an angled Box End wrench over the line, then to the nut.

When you put the new one on.. start the nut by hand, then slip the angled box end on, slide it all the way to the PIA nut, tighten, slip it all the way off.. then put the easy one on with an open end wrench.

Try and remember how much effort it was to loosen the nut(s).. use ONLY that much effort to tighten the new ones.. back up.

TIGHTER is NOT Better.. when it comes to seals/O rings.

Just a couple'a hints
