Hi I'm having an extremely agitating problem with my 2000 f250 my truc's been siting up for about 6 months when i decided to start her up about a week ago i noticed a new soun coming from the engine compartment it sounds like metal hiting on metal almost like my torque converted was full of metal bb's. i was intructed by a buddy of mine not to try and restart the truck due to the possibility of a bad oil pump or spun bearings. The noise sounds like the transmission to me but none the less i'd hate to damage my engine if it isn't. What do you think?

Check the obvious stuff, oil levels, ect. Sorry I can't help. Check the fan maybe a varment made a nest in the shroud and the fan is hiting? Same with the trans housing. Is the starter stuck on the flywheel? I'm shooting in the dark at a chipmonk

all fluids are fresh and ok. I'm also showing good oil pressure. fan is ok. starter is ok. it only chatters like that when its not in gear when I put in gear it starts to surge and the noise goes away. It surges for a few secs and then goes back to normal.

Sounds like it might be your torque convertor. It was common for the earlier 7.3 trucks to have torque convertors that began to sound like a coffee can full of marbles. I had the same problem for quite a period of time. It worked fine, just made noise when in park or neutral. When my tranny finally went out, I got a BTS tranny and the new torque convertor that came with it.

from dieselmann's site service bulletins-

98/99E-vans built after 1-5-98 and 99 F-series with 4R100 (E4OD) auto trans--rattle/scraping noise from bellhousing is caused by the torque converter. Verify the noise is caused by the converter by using an electronic transmission tester on break out box. Activate the Torque Converter Clutch solenoid by depressing and holding the TCC button on the trans tester or by grounding pin 54 of the B.O.B. If the noise disapprears with the TCC locked, replace the torque converter with new service part XL3Z-7902-DARM.

If th noise goes away once the TC locks up then it is the TC.. BUT.. I thought
that was the 99.5's and not the 2000's.... I have a late 2000 (mirrors extend) and it is not suposed to be a problem with them. Are you sure you have a 2000 and not a 99.5? Do your mirrors extend out longer for towing?
