I saw the police car video of that on the news. I think the officer showed a lot of restraint and handled the situation within what was no doubt his training and his responsibility as an officer.
I guess this sets a precedence now that we can offer up an excuse (however valid) for a traffic violation and putting others in jeopardy. What if he ran the light and killed someone else's MIL? would it still be okay as long as he got to see his dying MIL?

The article says that he never used his position or stated he was an NFL player but he did use the position afterward to contact the radio station and make it public.
Of course the race card had to be brought up in the article (didn't see that on the news) Didn't seem like it was race related on the cruisers video.
The article also mentions that the Moats family accuses the cop of pointing his gun at them. The article doesn't mention that the cop denies ever pointing a gun at them.

Sadly, it all depends on Who You Are these days. Seems as if.. IF you have some sort of a Persona, and/or a Trump card to play... Anything.. can boil into a National Media Event.

If that traffic violation had been commited by a John Q. Public person ? That "Bit", or "Piece", wouldn't even have made the local paper.

While I don't condone running red lights (my wife and I were hit by a red light runner several years back), sometimes there are exceptions. According to the first article I read about this, the guy had stopped at the red light, and had his emergency flashers on. It was after dark, and evidently not much traffic. I'm sure we've all wanted to run a red light when there is no traffic. A motorist on the other side noticed this and waved him on (whch was probably a stupid move). When they went through the light, the policeman saw them and began his pursuit. The disclosure of his being a pro football player wasn't mentioned until this hit the media. I think the cop was a bit "over the line" by delaying the ticketing process because you could see that they were all upset about the fact that a relative was dying. It seems that it finally took nurses to try to convince the police officer that someone was really dying and that these people needed to be there. Just my opinion, but I really think the policeman should have used a little common sense and compassion with this situation.

he ignored the nurse and a second officer who both told him the situation.

Now in his defense, he probably gets this all day everyday, and has grown a little unfriendly to the excuse.

However, I think was well within the parameters of his responsibility, UP UNTIL the second officer and the nurse advised him of the situation. After that, he was being a jackass.

the area of town he was red lighting through is not a COP friendly place, so the poor guy was already on edge, but.....


then you look at CA. and they held a march celebrating a cop killer..

iffin it were me i would have took a different approach when the policemen tried to stop me.

but only after receiving hand signals from motorists that it was safe for him to proceed.

but the cop was a ass after the officer and the nurse advised him of the situation. This is one of the I'm a cop, I'm going to be a ass today thing.
