I posted recently about exhaust, and received tons of great advice from all of you. I think I have decided to invest into leveling kit and tires before performance parts. I was wanting to make a zoodad, maybe modify OEM air box, and install a 3.5" flex-pipe in place of my stock muffler. I have searched and searched without any definitive answer on whether or not removing the muffler will harm my engine/turbo in any way? I know that my truck does not have a cat, so I'm assuming there will not be any back-pressure at all. Does this matter on a diesel? Thanks again, everybody!

Just one opinion ?

The main issue with the stock air box is the amount of air (CFM) that can pass through the [to small], Flat Panel filter.. Modifying the box won't give you much, if any, gains in air flow, after the filter.. or into the Turbo.

The Zoodad mod will make more air available.. for future intake mods but with the stock air box & filter .. yer still purdy much at square 1.

Removing the muffler won't hurt the engine or turbo. It will relieve some back pressure, but other than the Sound... you won't get any REAL, appreciable difference in performance. Flex Pipe doesn't last very long, leaks.. But that's yer call.

Prolly not what you wanted to Hear.. but again.. Just an opinion ? ;)

Joe

On edit: You will still have SOME back pressure without the muffler, due to the crush bends still being there. Won't hurt anything though, Diesel or Gasser..

Thanks. No, I expected it to be less than par mods...I'm just trying to help it a lil bit for now. I wanted to make sure it doesn't hurt it. You guys know how it is when you get something you've wanted for a while and you wanna do 1,000 different things, with only the funds for one at a time lol. I may weld a delete pipe on instead of flex, I just want it to sound good and help out for a while until I get to exhaust...

My muffler has been off my 2001 F-350 PSD since 15K miles. After over 10 years of hauling a 13K lbs,40 ft long fifthwheel from Indiana to South Florida and back 12 times and over 118,000 total miles--I can safely conclude that this was probably the most effective, economical, and best power booster that I've ever done on this tough ,reliable FORD F-350. A Good rule with a Diesel: Get MORE air in and more air out !! Good Luck neighbor-we're only 45+ miles away from Cincinnatti in Greensburg,In.

Thanks everybody, I appreciate all of your help! I found a NAPA with some 3.5" pipe, so hack it off I will!

Yeah, not too far away at all HCR. I'm gonna join the Hoosier ranks myself within the next year or so...I love Indiana.

Next up, I guess I'll look into that DIY 6637 or some type of intake. If there's anything else that you guys recommend I do to this thing, let me know. Have a good day!

As you do some searching the Wiki or DIY.. there are some "fer Cheap" improvements you can do..

One would be: R & R the Inlet QD fitting on yer Fuel pump, with a section of fuel hose and 2 band clamps. (reduces air getting mixed into the fuel) (not Good) (under 20 bucks)
