I have been using Ford's 10W30 oil for the winter, and there 15W40 for the summer. Now I have a price list for the Amsoil Series 3000 5W30 synthetic and filter. The prices are little steep, remember these are canadian dealer prices. But geez, almost $270.00 for an oil change? Is it worth! Is this oil that
special ! Can you really go an extra 8000 km with this stuff?
Thanks folks for any input .

Synthetic will really help your truck in the winter, because it is thinner, especially being way up in Quebec. I have noticed that the amsoil synthetic will stay cleaner longer, and not to mention it has really helped the life expectancy on our motors.

I would ask myself:

How long will I keep this truck? will you keep it long enough to justify the increased cost? Are you a person that dumps trucks before 100K? Or do you drive them until the motor needs a rebuild/ replacement. What will the increased cost be for the ams syn?

just do the math and see if the cost is justified?

The majority of these trucks are just driven by people less obsessed than the members here & most are run on Dino oil - They still can last a long time.

whoa thats hard to swallow....

i buy (currently) a case of 15/40 rotella @ costco (thats 6gallons)
for just under 50 bucks...add in 2 filters @ 15 bucks each (from walmart)

so for 75 bucks i get TWO oil changes...i change my oil every 5k miles
and have been testing every other sample...all that figure in, can you
safely get a break even point on the cost ? (by my rough calculation youd
have to run the synth. oil 9x longer than im running the conventional
rotella)

Hello Jim...I have used PetroCan Synthetic for about 5 years now..switched from Mobil Synthetic....I generally run a good 20,000 Ks between changes n oil still comin out the color of honey with the engine nearly at 400,000..never adding between changes. Also....it's $6 a litre versus ?

That sounds a little pricey for a oil change don't think I would spend that much as much as I love my truck. I run shell synthetic 5w-40 all year round and only cost around $115 for a oil change (everthing inclusive). And it is also api rated for the SD.

By the way... what oil are you getting from Mobil that is synthetic, and rated for diesel service? I've looked, but can't find any that meets the CI+ or J rating...

:sorry ya got me Kleetus.....I'll make this public....my fingers got to typin before my brain went into gear...I switched when I switched to diesels...initially because of cost but also because of the diesel rating. I had used Mobil 1 in my gas engines for many years but they have priced themselves out of the market in my books....apologies for the gaff.:hail

Be well!
