Exactly why we got one - dark hand scraped wood floors and a 105 lbs white lab - but mostly an 8 foot east facing window on the back and lot's of glass on the front door on the other side....
the low angle of the sun in the morning and evening makes the dog hair POP out on the floor...
SO, we got the top of the line iRobot when we first moved in last year and gave it a try for the frist 2 weeks or so....
unless they've changed the logic it would go over the same area over and over and get "confused"....
it seemed to go find the perimeter and then try to angle back across to the other perimeter....
in regular rectangular open rooms it did well, but any odd shapes or lots of obstructions like furniture it would go over the same track after a while...
not worth it for us - we returned it...
but you may want to give the latest ones a try and get the optional "virtual walls" to limit the size it will do and limit it from going over the staris... save your receipt though and make sure you can return it....
FYI, we got ours from home depot and they no longer carry them.... wonder if it was poor sales or poor performance and returns ???
