A couple days ago just at sunrise our german shepherd was barking up a storm and fighting something in our grove. So after I ate I went out and let my german shorthair out of her kennel and grabbed a 22 single shot with one bullet thinking it was a coon or possum. Went out into the grove and could hear a growl. Went in a little farther and heard more growling. No dogs so I called for them and they came up from behind me and the thing growled again. They headed back toward the house and the hunter (ME) felt like the hunted. Not shure what it was but I wasn't to far behind them. Today I found out several people had sighted two cougar about a mile or so from here. There has been sightings around here before but I almost soiled myself to actually have heard one that close and pissed off. Shepherd was close enough to get his front leg cut up.

Back when we used to have hot summers, (back before Al Gore--:lmao)

I used to hold off on taking my buddy for a walk until after dark and well after the heat of the day. We'd usually do a couple of laps around the subdivision which gets us about 2 miles.

One night, we had just started our second lap. Usually, Mattie is several feet ahead of me on the leash. But strangely, all of a sudden, she started lagging behind me at the full 15' length of the leash, whining all the time. I kept jerking the leash to get her to keep coming. She kept that up for about half way around the block. After thinking about it for a while, it was pretty evident to me that something was following us for a short distance. Something that my dog was aware of, but not to me.

In the 18 years we've been living here, we have had moose, bear, bobcat, skunks, racoons, wolf, coyote and of course, deer in our neighborhood. Not to mention, every couple of years, people show up looking for bigfoot.
For many, many years, people here in da U.P were reporting cougar sightings to the DNR. The DNR would find some reason or another to blow the report off. But just about a month or two ago, another cougar was sighted about an hour east of here. Photographic evidence was obtained that forced the DNR to admit, yep we've got big cats here in da U.P.

But the jist of the story is this, now whenever the dog and I go walking after dark now, I'm packing. A .40 S&W Taurus with a laser sight loaded up with 14hollow points with another 2 clips of full metal jackets as backup.

I'll never know what was tailing us that night. But if it happens again, should the need arise, I'll be able to drop it no matter what size it is.
