HPOP dealer woes

Wow. I have to vent a bit. :watchout My HPOP o-rings have been dripping for months, I bought the Ford o-ring kit; saw a Intl dealer and got their version (1/3 the price) too. Never made time to DIMyself. Today, took to dealer after getting a "2-hr labor" estimate.

Got a call from service rep, left a message that "the threads came out with the fitting". I called Bob Riley @ Diesel Site, looking for some honest input. I got plenty of help (based on the background advice, I really wish Mrs. Riley was my negotiator!) and some realistic numbers.

Called Rep: $1268 for new hpop and labor. Requested service manager, who after some discussion decided he could provide the labor, even though of course it wasn't their fault:rolleyes:. Now at $743...with 12/12 warranty.

Called Bob back. He made me a great offer for one of his stock hpops (not the Pulse, it isn't yet ready for prime time). Heard more really good advice from both the Riley's.

Called back service manager, asked for cost on pump, plus tax. We finally arrived at $625 after calling each other "engineers" (him) and "mechanics" (me) over design versus install issues. What I mean is, I'm an engineer and he claimed to be a mechanic once. Actually, he said "technician". He said he's seen 1000's of these engines with this problem (BS!) and that if indeed the threads had failed on the last install (duh!) then it would have blown out by now, and he has seen this happen. Yadayadayada. What a pile of excrement. When he told me that they have 'issues' with engineers, and that I work in a perfect world while he is in the 'real world'. My response was sort of an embarrassment in retrospect: let an engineer tell a mechanic sumfin, a torque spec means you need to use a torque wrench! (he actually said: 1. they don't use torque wrenches on the job. 2. there are no instructions for torquing the hose fittings. 3. they don't take the hpop off the engine). My IH instructions pretty much go against what he said, which I suggested and he said I was living in that perfect world! This is where I'd like to start swearing....:watchout ...but I won't

FYI: threads fail from 1 of 2 reasons, both are operator error:
1. cross threaded.
2. over-torqued insertion.

The first is a real understandable human foible. The second is just plain ignorance, laziness and stupidity (my opinion). I've done both, personally. Either way, it is operator error. This opinion is provided from a colleague who is a world class (no bs) agricultural engineer (that drives a Dodge :eek:).
