Something I've been wondering for a long time now, how does the hub system work on a Dodge 4x4 HD? Everytime I see one driving past, I can see the U-joints spinning. Does the Dodge front axle use a different system for engaging/disengaging the front wheels, or is it just at the transfer case?

Just the transfer case if I remember correctly. There are a few companies out there who make a kit to add hubs. Saves 1-2 mpg.

Dodge disengages the left side axle with a servo and a glorified synchronizer in the middle of the axle shaft...

that's why Dodge trucks typically get less economy that a Ford or GM counterpart.. they're still spinning the right side axle, differential and front driveshaft..

Dodge's last attempt at an auto locker hub was a dismal failure..
they got recalled, and then they recalled the recall...

Wow, I'd much rather have to fix a leaking vacuum hub seal than try to fix that setup inside of the axle tube that Dodge uses. Thanks for that info, just something I'd been wondering about for awhile.
