A friend of mine has a 97 F250 QC heavy duty 73. PSD and wants to do the front brakes. His question is: How does he get the auto-hub off so he can change the rotor?

I looked at the tiki wiki thread, but it was for maunal hubs. Not too much help there. he's up to the point of needed to figure the right way to get the hub off without doing any damage.

Thanks,:burnit

When you change from auto-hubs to manual ones it is just a matter of unbolting the autos and bolting the manual ones on so I would think they come off just the same. Maybe someone that has pulled them will chime in but I am sure there ain't nothing to it.

Its been awhile so I'm not sure I could look at my old hubs but I sent them to a guy from TDS and then he disappeared with out sending me anything back. but anyhow IIRC there is a big outer snap ring and I think an inner snap ring on the axle shaft remove those then the stuff basically pulls out then you have key that looks kinda like half of a big snap ring holds the bearing nut tight remove it then all you have to do is remove the nut and bearing then puul the rotor off after you have removed the brake caliper first of course hope this helps like I said its been awhile

I have recently become an expert as it took me part of 2 weekends and multiple trips to the auto parts store and 4 wheel parts. If the hub assemby is the same as the d60 then here goes. First remove the 3 screws from the auto hub cover and remove, remove large lock ring and auto locker assemby, next there will be a snap ring, then 3washers behind it, remove and then you can slide the inner and outer cam rings for the auto locker out as they have a tooth that fits in the spline, behind that is a c shaped clip with a tooth that fits into the groove in the spline to prevent the hub nut from backing out, remove then use a hub socket to remove the hub nut. remove the inner bearing and pull the hub out. If your changing out the rotors you will have to use a brass drift or something that will not tear up the lugs to drive them out of the hub and rotor. I tore up my auto locker on one side so I am now the proud owner of warn premium manual locking hubs. not sure about that yet but we'll see. If you have any other questions I'll try to help in any way I can. The instructions on the wiki are for the sd hub and rotors which are much simpler to change.

that sounds about right, the hardes thing for me was trying to get that C-ring thing with the pin out.i use a pick with a 90* on the end and got it to come out.i put the lug nuts on the studs and pop them out that way.when you take the hub out stack everything up like it came out and when you go to put it all back in you will know what is next.check you lug nuts after the first little drive and then check again just to make sure you get them pulled in the new hub good.
