Hello,

I bought a 2001 F250 4X4 7.3L diesel about 2 months ago. I have had steering issues since day one. When driving down the road it feels like you are trying to balance on a ball. The steering wheel has some play but nothing to excessive. While driving the truck wants to wonder a little when you correct the wondering you have to just bump the steering and not make a full correction. If you make a full correction it feels like the truck is about get away from you. I have checked all the steering linkage and everything seems to be tight with no slop. I am leaning towards a steering gear box as the fix. please help if you have any good ideas

It sounds like the steering box to me. There a couple of guys here that just had their steering box replaced. They got it from Red ___? Tail Gunner will show up soon and tell us.

sounds like the box is adjusted tight on the top adjuster. If its too tight it feels weird because it will not not return to straight on it's own.(you still need to steer, but if it is right, sure almost seems to correct itself) Things get weird when you have to counter steer to straighten it out. Box could be shot too. But try loosening 1/8 turn up to maybe 1/4 turn.

Unlocked hubs? I agree with JL, if the hubs are in. Did you check the ball joints w/the tires in the air? VERY common problem w/these trucks, as well as the unit bearing(wheel bearing) being loose. Good luck!

Before I replaced my steering box, I kinda felt like a bowling ball going down an alley with the kiddy bumpers in the gutters. It was about all I could do to keep it somewhere between the center line and shoulder marking.

In the last 6 months I've done ball joints and steering gear. Much better now.:sweet

Thanks TG that is who I could not remember. One of the new guys was asking who built a good steering box.
