Hey everyone, rotated my tires yesterday and noticed the funniest thing (I love looking for non-existent problem and making them into a problem:D ). When I busted the lugnuts loose I noticed they were not as tight as I had torqued them. What I discovered is that, when I jacked up the X to take some of the weight off of the tire when I break the lugs loose, they were not as tight as when I had torqued them previously. When I put the tire on and tighten the lugnuts and lower it, they were tighter (almost to the point I could not torque them anymore with my 4-way). The rear seems to be worse then the front. I made sure the rim was seated correctly before I would snug the lugnuts (approx 25+ ft. lbs.) while it was jacked up, when I would lower it for the final Torque. The lugs were a lot tighter than when it was jacked up. I know the tires are seated correctly because it drives great on the hi-way.

So I am going to lift the truck slightly to get the weight off, block the wheel where I can torque it in the air and I am going to test this hypothesis with my Torque wrench this weekend to make sure it was not a fluke.

Anyone ever heard of this or had a similiar issue?

Yes. And thats (part of) why BUSCH & NEXTEL cars Impact the lug nuts onto the hubs with the car is still up, on the jack.

I was also very suprized to learn what a difference in torque there can be after a wheel cools.... if you torqued it on, on a Hot/Warm hub.

Thanks Joe, I have heard stories that if you over torque the lugs it may warp a rotor, have you heard of that?

Now the correct way to do this would be???????
Hot rim in air
hot rim on ground
cold rim in air
cold rim on ground

Prolly a .. To Each, his/her own but what I do:

Cold or Hot, wheel and Hub, I leave >just enough< wieght on the jack.. to Torque the nuts. After I'v driven it for a day or two.... I Check/Re-Torque them all.
