After taking the required $110 class, filling out the application package, getting photo'ed, fingerprinted and writting another check for $100, I finally got my permit to carry a concealed handgun in MI.

Having a concealed carry permit has several advantages. The requirements for transporting a handgun in a vehicle are not as strict, you can carry with you, "at the ready" in the car/truck and don't have to lock it away in the trunk. You can buy without getting a purchase permit before hand. And by all accounts from other permit holders, cops are more inclined to cut you slack if you should momentarily loose track of how fast you're going, like some of us have a tendancy to do :pb:pb:pb :nudge

While the U.P. doesn't have the problems to the degree that other parts of the country may have, I have seen a few signs that those problems may be spreading in our direction. Just by watching the news, you can see people from outside the U.P. in court for transporting drugs or committing other offenses. It doesn't take a lot to see that times are a changing. During the concealed carry class I took, several stories were related, verifiing the need to protect one's self at all times. So I'm now adopting a position of it's better to have it and not need it, vs need it and not have it.

??? What is a puchase permit ???

Tbar

In MI, to purchase a handgun, you must either have a concealed carry permit or or a permit to purchase.

To get a permit to purchase, you have to go to your local police or sheriff's dept and they will run a background check on you. I would guess to see if you have any arrest records, warrants, convictions or court orders that would prevent you from owning a handgun. Some states have a 4 day wait. When I bought my Taurus PT-101 a year ago, my purchase permit only took me about 15 minutes to get, but my record is about as clean as it gets.

Permit - we don't need no stinkin permit.

Right-To-Carry Law Type: No permit required carrying concealed in Alaska. HB 102, signed by the Governor on June 11, 2003 changes Alaska Statute 11.61.220 to allow anyone 21 or older, who may legally carry a firearm to also carry it concealed without having to obtain a special permit.

Only two states are like this - Vermont and Alaska.

Kent;
I think it is important to have law abiding citizens carry firearms in some cases, so that criminals do not think that they are the only ones armed.

In California and many states, it is called CWP, Concealed Weapons Permit.
I have had a cwp since leaving the Sheriff's Dept. in 1979. I do not carry a weapon as a rule, normally only when I travel.

Ironically, two states that don't allow concealed carry at all: Virginia & Illinois,

homes of Northern Illinois University & Virginia Tech.
