After taking the required $110 class, filling out the application package, getting photo'ed, fingerprinted and writting another check for $100, I finally got my permit to carry a concealed handgun in MI.
Having a concealed carry permit has several advantages. The requirements for transporting a handgun in a vehicle are not as strict, you can carry with you, "at the ready" in the car/truck and don't have to lock it away in the trunk. You can buy without getting a purchase permit before hand. And by all accounts from other permit holders, cops are more inclined to cut you slack if you should momentarily loose track of how fast you're going, like some of us have a tendancy to do
While the U.P. doesn't have the problems to the degree that other parts of the country may have, I have seen a few signs that those problems may be spreading in our direction. Just by watching the news, you can see people from outside the U.P. in court for transporting drugs or committing other offenses. It doesn't take a lot to see that times are a changing. During the concealed carry class I took, several stories were related, verifiing the need to protect one's self at all times. So I'm now adopting a position of it's better to have it and not need it, vs need it and not have it.
