The left rear brakes on my 2005 Ford Five Hundred have started "grinding" pretty loudly almost all the time. It has 27000 miles on it, and I've noticed a good bit of brake dust on the wheel. I called the local Firestone (15th & Custer) who suggested that before bringing it in, to wash off the brake dust just in case that the dust was causing the noise. I did that, and it's still noisy. I need to know from those of you in this area which brake shop do you recommend (I'm not a "do-it-yourself person)? I've tried Midas before, but they always seemed to find other problems to fix. I've also thought about Just Brakes. I should probably take it back to Ford, but I don't want to pay through the nose for new pads. Thanks in advance for all your advice.

arent you under factory warrently 27k on an 2005 ? seems like
extreamly low miles (even from a hard driver like me) to have
worn out a set of pads on the rear

this is a fairly easy job that you can do in your driveway...but
my largest concern is that you need rear brake work on such
a low milage car.

and thats their job the find MORE "wrong" w/ the car...its called
"average ticket price" in the car repair biz....dont let 'em scare you
into doing more work than you need.

if youre in or around north houston ill do the job for you (in about 1hr
even if the rotors are toast)...and show you how easy it is...

what you could be hearing is the wear indicator telling you the rear
pads are getting thin & need replacement (last set of pads i bought
for a car were 20bucks for the fronts)

Very unusual that

a) they would wear out so fast and
b) that they would wear out before the front.

Wonder if

a) you might have a bad caliper
b) you have a rock stuck in there someplace

Guys, thanks for all your responses. As far as factory warranty, it won't cover brakes - I've already checked that. I went to Just Brakes at Spring Creek & Independence. I looked at the rotors while the wheels were off, the front were pretty smooth, but the back ones -especially the left one - were pretty rough. The guy there said it's unusual for the rear ones to go out first. Said the front ones were down about 30%. The pads have to be special ordered since their suppliers don't have them (because it's a 2005) and we'll get them done tomorrow. With all the grinding noises, we were afraid to drive it any more than necessary. They said (I don't know if it's true) that they are still having problems finding pads for the current style of F-150's. When I had the PSD serviced a couple of weeks ago (at 99,000 miles) the dealer said the brakes would probably need attention soon, so I'll check out y'all's recommendations and get some prices rather than waiting until it's metal scraping metal. Also, the Just Brake guy said that since the Five Hundred is a European design, their pads aren't as good as the American designed cars.

Here's the link to the thread I started at the blueovalnews site: http://www.blueovalforums.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=4957&st=0&gopid=73461&. Seems like this is a common problem with the Five Hundred, Freestyle, and Montego. Hopefully Ford will do a recall, but I'm not going to "hold my breath" until they do.
