I know you can test the glow plugs with a volt ohm meter but as far as a maintenance routine does anyone know about how many miles on a truck before you should change them just to avoid trouble. I live in Florida so i probably dont even need them to start the truck, right? I also am guessing that it would depend on how many times you started the truck since you owned it too?

Yeah being in Fla you arent as dependent on the GPs as those of us who live a few hundred or so miles to the north of you but they will help you on the colder winter mornings with faster warm ups and less white fogging of the neighborhood. I think you are correct when you say it has more to do with number of cycles than it does how many miles are on the plugs. The guy that drives 200 miles and only starts the truck twice is in better shape than the guy who drives the truck 200 miles and starts it 20 times.

you rarely will need them down here in FL, Though I can say that I did need mine a few times this winter when the temps dipped down lower.

I will highly recommend that you keep good ones in there with a good GPR because you'll be surprised at how difficult the truck is to get started when the block cools down into the 40's which a winter trip to middle GA that's not a rare occurrence, and even this year I had frost on my window when I was at a conference in Orlando.

glow plugs

My fathers truck has 329K miles on the origional GP's Most the time it's the GPR that goes once a year only use the nitrogen filled motorcraft relay.

Changing the glowplugs is a lot of work don't touch them if it's starting OK.
always use Buru Motorcraft plugs if you do it
