I was wondering what would happen if the radiator cap wasn't holding pressure? I had mine replaced recently, but I still have issues when towing up long grades. I was pulling a 15K 5ver and also had problems towing a 7K travel trailer and running with the AC on. Temps will climb and I need to get out of the throttle for a while to let it cool down. I thought the 7.3 cooling system was way over kill? What are some things to check? Rad cap again? no leaking coolant anywhere (waterpump dry). Boost leak? Thanks

check the thermostate... are you running 50/50 mix or have you added more water then coolant.... just somethings to check.... also are you going by the factory idiot gauge, or a good gauge? lastly do you have your tuner set to the tow mode?

good luck with the problem

Smoknz,

Can you hear the fan coming on? If you can't you may want spin the fan by hand when the engine is off, if it spins fairly easily more than one full revolution the fan clutch is probably going bad. Also how old is your coolant and which coolant are you running?

Tuner was set to 40Hp tow, exhaust was usually under 1000deg. I'm running the "green" antifreeze at an unknown concentration. I know it tests to like -29F. Yes I was going off the factory idiot gauge. It usually never moves, but when it does start, it goes pretty quick to near red if I don't get out of the throttle. I tried pulling the cap off the other day when it was up to normal temps, and there was no pressure? This isn't right, correct?

you may want to go have it pressure checked,
you should have noticeable pressure.
also check your oil level, if its gotten high it will aerate and cause heat issues as well, especially under a load.
and like rooster said , is your fan clutch worn out can hear it engage???
normally the 7.3 takes alot to heat up, you got something amiss

When towing and I come to a stop, the fan is really loud (moving air) untill I get going to around 30 or so. I'm pretty sure it's working. Does this sound right?

I just tried this, and I could spin the fan around at will, but the engine is warm. should this test be done with the engine cool? Maybe I found my problem?

My fan spins the same hot or cold, quarter maybe half a revolution. How much does it spin and how fast?

I'd actually drain the radiator, pull the cap and the hoses, and look inside with a penlight for corrosion blooms around the tubes...

What was the ambient air temperature?
