Fuel pump replacement

I will be changing out my fuel pump today and I have a couple of quick questions to throw at y'all.
1) A buddy is coming over to help take the hood because I want all the space I can have (2nd fuel pump replacement). Can I damage my engine if I drive with the hood off? Not long hauls, but around here (Dallas), they aren't calling for rain until June 09' (little sarcasm) so water wouldn't be a factor. I ask because my buddy might not be able to come back for a day or two.
2) Can y'all refresh my memory on how the fuel bowl comes off? I remember it being a left handed thread, but for the life of me I can't remember what I did to get it off the first time, (Approx 2 years ago)i.e. socket size over the stem.
3) Anything else I should do while everything is out and I have a good look at the valley?

Just want to emphasize don't let the fuel pump follower fall into the engine. Safest to loosen the bolts then rotate the engine till it pushes the pump up.

As to the left hand thread, Only thing I can think of is you're refering to the standpipe inside the filter housing? If so, I think it is 7/8. Easiest tool is one of the cheap O2 sensor sockets. Not the regular socket kind but the one that has the hole thru the center and an offset 3/8" or 1/2" drive. Otherwise a crowsfoot usually works.

(You don't have to take the standpipe out to remove the filter housing)

No need to remove the turbo! The fuel filter standpipe is left-hand threaded, but you don't really need to remove it unless you are going to clean out the bowl while the assembly is out (which is a good idea, BTW). The fuel bowl gets removed by:

Disconnecting the fuel bowl wiring harness at the connector on the passenger side of the bowl and at the IPR (and maybe another sensor not located on the bowl itself).

Disconnecting the fuel lines at the fuel pressure regulator (3 of them) and fuel pump (2) and bowl drain (or at least loosening all the hose clamps ... drain the bowl first!).

Remove the two bowl hold-down bolts and that should be about it.
