I've read several of the threads that mention a bad/weak fuel pump as a possibilty for worsening mileage and or loss of power.
1) About how long can you expect teh original pump to last?
2) How can youcheck to see if it is bad/going bad?

I am thinking of doing the pre-pump filter and in-tank mods. These will be the first mods on the truck. Since I will have the tank down, this would be an ideal time to replace the pump, if I know it is on the way out. The truck has 183k on the stock system.

1) My pump has 180+ on it and is still going strong.

2) Put a gauge on it and check the pressure at idle and WOT.

TBar,
Thanks for the reply, but to show my ignorance: The gauge, is that just put anywhere upstream of the pump or is there an easy place to tie it in? Also, what should the pressure range be?

You can see the port location on the back of the fuel bowl in this wiki article.

FPR Shimming Article

Stock fuel pressure is in the 50-60# range. Observe idle and wot pressures and report back to us.

Another question about the guage....Is there anything special about the gauge and where would be a good spot to pick on up? This will be the first time I have dealt within other than my old CJ and fuel pressure was not really an issue. Can the guage and stuff be picked up at a Home Depot or similar or do I need to go to a welders supply or automotive parts place? I hope to check things this weekend, might shim the regulator if the pressure looks good. We'll see....
