Thanks for all the info and diagrams for this job (fuel pump replacement) but I just got the bowl out and I found a sand pit at the bottom. I was astonished at the amount of junk that came out and is still in there. It is soaking in engine degreaser as I type this. Is that going to hurt anything? Suggestions on cleaning it out? It is completely gutted, senosors, "base plate" and all. The base plate is pretty thin in some areas, it also has 5 95 stamped on it, is this the month my truck was made? Can I call an auto parts store or is this a dealer only thing? Do I need to worry about it?
Also there is a black plasctic cone shaped item that sits on the drivers side of the fuel bowl. Is that the FPR screen? haven't messed with it yet, also there is a thick bluish green hose that runs from the part that bolts on the driver side of the fuel bowl to the bottom of the fuel bowl. Is that a special type of hose? I would like to replace it while everything is off.
Appreciate the help!

The FPR screen is in the hole at the top of the bowl, drivers side. About half way down is the thermostat and connector for the fuel heater. Below that is probably the cone you're talking about. It's the water in fuel sensor probe.

Clean the bowl really well and line the bottom with JB weld to prevent further corrosion. You could probably fill the pits and thin spots with aluminum braze but I haven't tried that yet so I'm only recommending JB weld (regular, not fast curing)

I have one lined with Kreem tank liner, but haven't tested it long term yet.

The hose is pretty much standard fuel line, but better to use one with a barrier type lining, like SAE 30R9 Fuel Injection hose. It will hold up longer to diesel and also is fine for Biodiesel.

Hi Joat,
I will throw some JB on the bottom of the bowl. As for the FPR screen I found it when I was cleaning out the valley. I have no idea how long it has been off. It was pretty nasty to say the least. I feel silly asking this but will the screen missing cause engine damage? (I say this with a truck that has 307K on it). Or is that why there was so much crud at the bottom of the fuel bowl. Also glad to see ya' over here, I always enjoyed reading what you had to say at TDS.
Thanks,
Craig

Your fuel bowl is one of the 94, early 95 ones that had the other sock-type screen in the smaller fuel-bowl looking thing under the regulator (like mine). It can get quite a bit of stuff in it too. The plastic bowl can be stubborn to get off (I had to use channel-locks) and is easier to to when the bowl/regulator is off the truck. Also be careful not to overtighten any pipe-threaded sensors on reassembly as the cast housing on both the regulator and fuel bowl crack easily! Cheers!

Some remove the FPR screen and have no problems. It covers the return to tank orifice, so main concern with it off is potential clogging of that orifice. Same issues then as with the FPR clogged; air doesn't purge back to tank so you get misc issues as air hits the injectors.
