I am changing out the front differential fluid. Mobil 1 synthetic was $9/quart, whereas Royal Purple was $18-$20/quart at 2 different stores this weekend (both 75w90). So I bought the Mobil 1.

Do I need a friction additive like in the rear differential?

L/S in the front end makes for very hard steering when in four wheel drive. We used them on our Jeeps and I really liked it in the Rubicon, but not on the street. I would never have front L/S on any street vehicle. We drive on the street and not the Rubicon.
