so i found a guy who needs to get rid of a 7.3 motor fast. i can probably get it for under $1000.

this is what i know about it. it's out of a higher mileage 2001 f350. It was coded and verified that is has the forged connecting rods (pulled oil pan to look). he says it's missing the oil pressure sensor and a cps sensor and that's it. he also said the inside of the cylinder walls looked good with no scoring or anything.

so, should i buy it? what do i need to check on the motor? compression test? im still new to mechanic work and not sure how to do one of these?

i'm thinking of having it for a backup motor or if i can turn it around and make some money off of it, id be willing to part with it too.

how much could i expect to get from something like this? i know these motors are expensive and it seems like a good price. he also has a van turbo he said he would sell me for $100. whats your guys opinion on the van turbo?

IIRC a van turbo will fit. ( Banging head) I can't recall directly but something about having to get an adapter for it?

As far as the block, I would definitely get a machine shop to check it out and make sure it's usable.

$1000 for a block with forged rods that CAN be built? I'd jump on that with both feet.

Add what? Some change $ in parts? and you would pretty much have a bulletproof spare engine on the cheap IMHO.

can a machine shop check it out if its a complete motor? or would it have to be torn down?

'bout the only way to REALLY know is to do a tear down/inspection. exterior looks can be deceiving.

Not knowing the seller, or the circumstances.. It's a "Buyer Be Smart" deal. Is it outa the truck ? Kept indoors ? Clean in appearance ? What happened to the F-350 ?

Lotsa variables Clint.

yeah, i'm definitely having second thoughts. there is just too much unknown. it is outa the truck and not sure what happened to the f350. he said it needed to be powerwashed. the guys an officer in the air force, so i would think he's being honest with me. he said he got it from a shop here in town to put in his excursion one day. so i dont think hes ever heard it run either. unless he offers it to me for a ridiculous amout!

how can i verify that its a van turbo?

Van turbo has a bigger exhaust port . Lemme look around, but I'm thinking its a 1.15 exhaust port? Dont quote me.

Still, for a grand cost? Call up a shop and see what they charge to verify the block. Then ask the seller to split the cost with you. :)

Well, after thinking it over, I'm gonna play it safe on this one. I really don't know enough about it to be comfortable buying it. I actually see them for sale quite often in these parts.

The "van turbo" turned out to be a 94-97 turbo.

Here is the link to the craigslist posting if anyone else is interested.
7.3 Diesel Engine - Ford Powerstroke (forged rods)

He's getting desperate to sell it, so you could probably get an awesome deal on it.

Thanks for all the info guys.
