exhause tip question

This may be a dumb question, but I'll suck up the pride and ask anyway. What exactly does an exhaust tip do? Is it there just for looks or will I actually gain something by putting a 4" tip over my stock 3.5" tail pipe?

Thats a good question.....I think its more for looks than anything else. I think it will do a little for sound, but nothing for performance. Thats my insight on it, I could be way off though!

It will only be for looks, unless you put a 6"x18" tip on there. My dad had one on his straight piped 97, and it sounded a lot different than others with a straight pipe andthe stock tailpipe It makes the exhaust sound a little more hollow, or echo, if you will.

i know for a fact mine gave me an increase in the WOW factor,
there may have been a slight increase in mpg as well, but since i like t hear the rumble any gain is now offset by my right foot

If the exhaust pipe extends thru the entire length of the exhaust tip, I would guess the tip won't make anything more than a cosmetic difference.

But if the tip is attached to the last inch or 2" of the pipe and the tip actually extends the pipe making it longer, and it is of a larger diameter than the pipe, I would think it would have a "megaphone" affect. This would make the tone of the exhaust deeper and slightly louder than without the tip.
