Anyone see the Engineering News Record article on 'Repowering the fleet' in the 5/29 issue? i will paraphrase...
The basic jist is that California Air Resources Board (CARB) pending rule on on emissions would ban old diesel powered equipment. NOx and particulates are the target.
they also talk about USLD, emulsified fuel (emulsified with WATER), particulate traps, diesel oxidation catalysts.
contractors are stymied because of all the misinformation. some companies are taking it on themselves to repower their 10-30 year old equipment with new power plants. the show a couple of pics of a new C15 Acert motor going into a modded 30 year old scraper.
however, for the timebeing, while this is NOT being required by law, there is grant money to help foot the bill. $96K for a $120K engine refit!
some of the interesting stats they give is in the amount of reductions-
Lubrizol Emulsified Diesel, (http://www.lubrizol.com/PuriNOx/default.asp), 20% reduction of both PM & NOx emissions with 500 ppm diesel.
particulate filters with 85%+ reduction of particulates with 15ppm fuel.
they also reference some of the bigger projects in the country that have lower emissions requirements.
its a fluffy, fox news type piece but the sanitised version of what's happenine is interesting.
