Quick question not that I am planning on doing it anytime soon. But I have been looking at different turbos' for the 7.3 psd. I have not really seen any that allowed for usage, or specific to the early 99. I have really only seen any for the 99.5 and up. Any comments on this. I know there are turbos out there I am just not sure where. :thanks

not zactly sure?
If you have an early 99...any upgrade to the turbo will include a new pedistal, intake plenums and a few other things that my sleep deprived brain can't think of now. The early 99 turbo is smaller...but also doesn't have the stall issues of the 99.5 and later turbos, and tends to spool faster.

Bob Riley at dieselsite.com used to have a complete kit to change out the early 99 turbo. I haven't been there in awhile so I don't know if he still has it.

With that in mind is a ball bearing turbo better than another one?

At the speeds they spin, that is the only turbo made. I have never heard of a sleeved turbocharger. Have you???

Most turbo's ride on bronze sleeves. Ball bearing turbo's are far less common, and alot more expensive than the plain bearing sleeve type. They seem to spool up faster though, which may be a benifit with the larger A/R turbine housings on aftermarket turbo's.

yep
the detroits and cats are a bronze sintered bearing last long time, just a thin gap of pessurized oil.
but as with anything the operator plays a big part. proper cool downs not shutting off while the turbo is spinning down from a big hard run.
first time i tore one down in school i was amazed at no ball bearings

sorry smokn you beat me in posting a sleep again was I

I was an owner of an 8V92TA Detroit and I could have sworn that it was ball bearing. I am surprised that it was oil sleeved. Seemed to run on quite a bit after cool down. I never tore it down so I don't really have any evidence to dispute your claim or not.

I never had to tear into my 8V92. It was remaned before I got the truck. I did all sorts of other things that were not engine related, like radator, brakes and tranny. 13 speed is heavy.
