My truck has 190k I have no Idea what has been done to it in the past! The truck appears to be all stock. I've had it almost two weeks and here's what I have done so Far! Newer model Lariat Wheels and tires. Panasonic Head unit. Plastic Billet looking grill. Used Black tool box. I ordered inchannel vent visors and a new bug deflector. I ordered a black full treadplate tailgate protector(it has a spray in but they didn't sand the gate before they sprayed it but the bed is fine) I replaced both back actuators yesterday and need to do the front! I bought the truck to pull a 28ft enclosed trailer to haul my drag truck ! I need to know what are safe upgrades for the motor and tranny with this many miles!

Thanks in advance for any and all help!

190K wouldnt be considered high miles on this year of truck. What tranny do you have, 5 spd or auto? An air intake kit and exhaust can really help our trucks breath better. The AIH delete mod and fuel pressure bump can be beneficial as well. After that if youre still not happy, put a chip or programmer in it. Get gauges first though.

For a start, you can look at my sig and see what I've done to my early 99. I've got a tad over 270,000 miles.

But as a minimum to start with:

Exhaust: get a BTM or a real exhaust system. There are a lot of different brands around, MBRP, Magnaflow, Hog, etc. If your "cat" were to run away from home and never return, that wouldn't hurt things either.

Air intake: Replace the factory air filter. Generally the more popular options are Ford AIS, Tymar (either purchased or a home made version), or one of the AFE intakes. One of the big problems with the original air filter is the filterbox. The lids tend to leak, causing a air leak downstream of the filter. This allows dust to get into the turbo causing wear on the compressor wheel blades.

Gauges: Get a boost, EGT and tranny temp as a minium. You can mount them about anywhere. Many folks mount them on the A-pilar.

Chip/programing: This is where the early 99 is at the biggest disadvantage. The early 99's have a lesser computer (PCM). With the later 99's, or 99.5, an upgraded PCM was installed. One of the problems/ limitations with the early 99 was the horrible tranny programing of the early software programs. I hated with a passion, the lame assed manner my tranny would operate. But all that that changed with phone call to Jody of DP-Tuner. He was able to supply me wth a 99.5 PCM with a DP-Tuner 80hp Econo tune programed on it. Not only does the engine now run like a raped ape, but the tranny will now better stay in overdrive (if you so like) when pulling trailers up hills or into headwinds.

Of all the mod's I've done, I have to say that the DP-Tuner programmed PCM and the BTS tranny are the top two result getters.

Thanks Guys I am definately going to make most of these changes! The tranny seems to shift to early for my taste! I'll do the home made air intake this week and the Aih delete! I'd love to do the mod that makes it take gas quicker! When the pump clicks Off it will take over 5 more gallons! I'll probably get a deep pan when I install the temp gauge!

I'll save you a bit of trouble, there is no AIH on a early 99.

does the early 99 with auto still have the 4r100?
Yes, it's the only auto tranny available on a Superduty with the 7.3.
