I filled up last Wednesday and as I pulled out of station the truck shutoff but fired right back up and it was fine. On Thursday it shutoff and was hard to get it back started. It would crank up but as soon as I touched gas pedal it would shutoff, finally I was able to rev up and get it to stay on. There was no service eng light on. I changed fuel filter and added Seafoam fuel system cleaner for diesel on Sunday and it ran fine until this morn. It shutoff and was very hard to get going and white smoke kept blowing out when I was trying to get it to run right. I finally got it going and it did fine but did shutoff once more but it fired back up and got me home. Any thoughts or solutions?

Several years ago, I would occaisionally experience a sudden bucking or misfire. If idling, the engine would stall. It seemed like the problem would frequently occur soon after filling the tank. When I drained the water drain on the fuel filter bowl, the problem seemed to get better.

Some time later, the fuel pump started going bad and I replaced it. But after experiencing the "sticker shock", I figured I'd be well advised to protect my new investment. I went to the local auto parts place and got a water separator/fuel filter, mount, fuel hoses and fittings. I installed the thing ahead of the fuel pump to help protect it.

Since then, I have no more similiar problems with bucking, misfiring or stalling at idle. Coincidence or cure? :dunno

Well I drained the fuel filter lever so we will see what happens. It always wants to shutoff after I have been running for a little while

Here's the update.....I drove about 10 miles to jobsite then went to lunch and it shutoff in drivethru after not starting back up....it would turn over but black smoke would come out and it would die.....I am now sitting in parking space and I can get it to idle for about 10-15 seconds and it dies.....any thoughts? Could this be really bad fuel? Injectors? I have no clue?

With it dying after 10-15 secs, I'd suspect a fuel thing. Have you checked the fuel filter yet? I'd want to check and see what the fuel pressure is also, might be a fuel pump issue.

On edit: If you have bad fuel, it may have cruded up a new fuel filter. I've heard of that happening before.

A quick test for fuel pressure might be to open the fuel filter drain and turn the key on. If it comes under pressure, the pumps working. If it comes out more slowly like a gravity drain, then there isn't any fuel pressure.

Beyond that quick test, I can't think of anything else. You might need to get a analyizer/scanner hooked up. :dunno

Good Luck.

BTW: the fuel pump will only run for about 15 seconds with the key on & engine not running before it turns off. It stays on with the engine running.

Ok I watached drain and turned key on and it definitely had pressure and it of courde fizzled down to a gravity drip after several seconds......should I keep doing that to get some more fuel coming through lines.

When it slowed to a dribble, could you still hear the fuel pump running?

If your pump is still running, but the fuel is not comming out, I'd think you're getting it narrowed down.

If that's the case, consider a fuel line obstruction or air getting sucked into the system.

I have heard of foreign objects getting into the tank for various reasons. The fuel will run until the obect gets sucked against the intake in the tank. When the pump shuts off, the object falls away only to get sucked up again when the pump runs again.

Air in the lines has been an issue since day one for these things. A guy named "Hutch in Augusta" identified the problem and came up with a modification to the fuel pickup in the tank and fuel line to the pump to fix the problem. There is PLENTY of reading around about that mod.

You say you filled the tank last week. How much fuel is in it now?

I didnt actually fill up but there was probably 15 gallons in the tank now there is probably 6-8 gallons left. I didnt listen for pump to turn on just watched the stream. i will look at it again. i got a ride and called a towtruck to get it to dads shop so we will see....will definitely keep you updated. One more thing. When I let the truck sit for a while it will fire right up but after it idles and shuts off you cannot get it to fire back up without waiting for a little while. I didnt know if that little bit of info would help any. If yall thin of anyhting else please post I am up in the air on this one
