It seems as though the diesel prices are now equalling and/or exceeding the axle ratios of our trucks. In the DFW area, the price has already passed the F250 ratio (3.73) and is now at the F350 ratio (4.10). Hopefully the price will start dropping before it reaches F450 levels (4.88) Of course, regular gas prices are getting into the F150 axle ration range (3.31-3.55). But then we'd all be spinning our wheels with joy if the price would drop to "overdrive ratios" (0.75).

If thats the case then thers hope sincwe ford has the option of replacing the 3.73 with a 3.55 gear ratio. and i can see them making it standard. to make the mileage NUMBERS look better.

the OBS's had a 3.55 options years ago...the superduty (99-07) didnt.
the 6.4 mpg is DISMAL, and theyre re-introducing the 3.55 rear as a
way to TRY and help the mpg....imo the 3.55 in the 6.4 is a band-aide.

Speaking of dismal mileage, anyone see the new little fuel mileage brochure going out with the new s/duties? It is classic. It starts off with what DIC lights do not require a trip to the dealer. Apparently dealers are being overwhelmed with trucks coming back from the DIC lights being on. Then it goes into some very high-tech info on how to save fuel. Did you know that keeping your tires properly inflated can save you fuel? Not to let the truck idle can save fuel, too. Using synthetic oil offers a small fuel savings, as does not running the a/c if not needed. And a dirty air filter can reduce fuel mileage. It didn't mention anything about the filter being clogged with snow, strangely enough. A buddy of mine who owns a garden center just got an 08, and he stopped at my place last nite and showed me the truck and this little book. The truck has an owners manual, a diesel supplement, a DVD on features, and a doo-hickey to "save" tire pressures to the TPMS. Also some other papers about how the anti-lock brakes work. I can actually see how if this was your first diesel you would be left scratching your head. Back on track: the 3:55's aren't going to help if you have something to tow.

I agree Bush, also what if a guy NEEDS lower gears for towing. 3.55's ain't gonna cut it.

a better <more viable> option would be to offer customers a
DOUBLE OVERDRIVE (gearvendors or someone like that)...then
you could tow and still get some reasonable highway mpg.

How about a 2 speed rear? I've had those in straight trucks. Anybody even make something like that?

thats were i was kidding . with the topic of the post being fuel$=ratios #..

but if it was to become a reality whats a .25 gonna do for us it would still have fuel over 3.50-3.75 a gallon.. a buck more than gas.

Diesel out here now is $4.20 per gallon, and seems to be going up every day.
