I was informed today by a friend of mine that had his 2004, 6.0SD towed to the local Ford dealership that his engine problem was terminal.

He was told by the service manager that: "The gear on the crank has a dowel pin that keeps it in alignment. This pin has broken, which is causing the gear to spin on the crank, which in turn keeps the engine from starting/running." He further states that this is not serviceable except by replacing the entire crankshaft, which requires pulling the engine from the vehicle.

Has anyone else heard of this problem? I have searched the web looking for this problem but have been unable to locate another like it.:dunno

Thanks to all for reading..:)

The timing gears on the 6.0 are on the rear of the engine. If the keyway for the crank timing gear sheared, in short order the crank would be galled. Engine's coming out for this. Don't know about possible valve damage from pistons hitting them.

It was my understanding that he turned it off and it would not start back. I had never heard of a gear key breaking like this before. That's why I thought something was funny.

Since it is a 2004, it must have been one of the "bad" ones made before the bugs were worked out. Hopefully it's still in warranty and Ford will furnish a new engine.
