Mysterious dash rattle,
The time came I couldn’t take the rattle any more, 1200 rpm all the way up to 2200, -mad
Stopping, starting, sitting in drive at red lights. It was getting to the point I was running out of volume on the radio to drown it out. So Saturday after the bout with the fuel filters and gell. I decided to remove the dash panels and find my rattle.
Well a few hours go by and the entire front dash fascia and ancillary equipment are strewn between the front and rear seats and part of the floor. I poke my head in and around all the suspect sources, all the dash to the body bolts are tight, no wire harnesses are bouncing around, I did kill one small spider, I think he was a stow away from the Texas trip (he was wearing a ten gallon hat) . So I am feeling good about my self, I successfully disassembled the dash, with no breakage of plastic clips or knobs. I thought now would be a good time to start up the truck and see if its gone or if maybe I can hear it.
Vrumph goes the mighty 6.0 , I run the throttle through 1200 up to 2400, buzzzzzzz rattle rattle like a washing machine gone wild.-mad Poking around with a flashlight and mirror and my well trained deaf ear inside the few places large enough to poke around, the rattle is now unimaginably loud and seems to be coming from UNDER the truck, like a heat shield or something
Oh I was a bit miffed by now, off goes the key and the light speed re-assembly of the dash, minus the dead spider,
I pop the hood and crawl up and over banging the EGR shields and the turbo shields, but all are tight and noise free. What could be causing this insipient noise?
So my enlarged belly and I slither under the truck banging and shaking anything that looks remotely loose.
And then I see the culprit, so simple and so perfect.
A plastic insulation blanket fastener popped through the body hole with a metal clip. Right next to my MBRP down pipe. But this clip is not tight, it’s just sort of sitty there. So out comes the key fob and a quick press of the remote start,
Did I say these things are loud under em when they start? Oh the noise. Then the fast idle kicked in vroom 1200 rpm, TALK ABOUT LOUD, and there was my little buddy dancing around pretty as you please dancing around there wiggling and having a great time of making noise, mocking me . I reached up to quell its river dance of noise and a quiet calm came over all the mechanical rhythm of the engine. Well I made short work of the offending clip and now we are rattle free.
