Are there any of you ford fanatics here that could tell me if a carrier out of a 67-68 ford f-250 dana 44 would fit in a 78 f-150 44. I was going to change gears from 3.00 to 4.56 in the 78 and need the higher numeric carrier.

The carrier from a 3. what ever axle will not fit a 4.56 ring gear. The 4.56 is too small in diameter to fit the 3.55 or 3.00 carrier. You could just buy my project truck and save yourself a lot of headache and money. Mine has 4.56 and Detroit lockers front and back. Its for sale. :D

This might help. I didn't read it all that closely.

Thanks for the reply. I did a search on google and found that sight too. It says the carrier will work, but I have the kind of luck that when all is apart there is some little difference that puts me on hold. I was hopeing for a list of years the same part number worked in.

Thanks for the reply. I think the split is 3.73 but just want to know if the old carrier will work in the 78 truck. You only have one project truck, I have 2 trucks and a jeep project. With mine and my son's projects it looks like a used truck lot around here. :roflmao 7 (seven) I think :dunno

Bummer, someone really needs to take this project off my hands. I will take what I have in it. Mine had 3.55 gears factory and I found out when changing gears that the 3.55 carrier was too large to use with the 4.56 gears. It didnt matter to me though because I put the lockers in and it replaced the carriers anyway. The bearings and dimensions should be the same so your deal should work as far as that. Another thing to watch out for is a gear set that comes with a spacer ring that bolts between the ring gear and carrier. This is a shotty setup and is very weak. It will not take mud bogging or rock crawling for long. Replacement carriers are cheap.
