coolant filter vs. warm up time?

Installed the coolant filter from dieselsite this summer. Now that the weather has turned colder, I noticed the truck doesn't warm up quite as quick as it did before. I already checked the thermostat and got my EBPV working again, but it still seems a little slow to warm up. Got to thinking about the coolant filter and how it works. Seems to me that haveing the filter installed would be the same as having the thermostat sticking open just a bit. Don't get me wrong, I love the coolant filter. I'm going to close the valves to the filter before I start the truck in the morning and see if it makes any difference. Does this make any sense to anyone else? I'm looking for any insight others may have. I don't know what else it could be.

its exactly like having the thermo cracked open. i do not notice how much longer it takes- when its cold out and the red beasty is grumpy, shes gumpy until she gets warmed up.

What coolant filter system do you have? The way mine is plumbed in I don't see how it could effect warm-up time. I have the Tymar filter system which is plumbed into the cab heater lines.

im surprised you could notice the heat loss through the filter, im interested in your results!

crumm where does the tymar kit mount the filter too? did you notice a heat loss in the cabin after you installed it?

if you look at the divers side of the pump neck, you will see a 1/4" square head pipe plug filling the hole. the OEM international trucks have the coolant filter plumbed to this location too.

the dieselsite filter plumbs into a bypass hole in the water pump and to the overflow tank. the hole is below the thermostat. so when the water pump is pumping, a small amount of coolant goes 'by' the thermo.

It mounts on the alternator bracket and is plumbed in with T's out of the heater lines. Cab heat is still scalding hot. I imagine more flow goes through the filter when the cab heat is off than when it is on but the cab flow is not reduced by the filter as near as I can tell.

With it plumbed like that I can see where warm-up time would be increased. I now understand.

Closed the filter shut-off valves this morning before starting the truck. Left the truck run a few minutes before leaving as usual. Temp. gauge reached normal operating temp. noticably sooner than it did with the valves open. The filter set-up I have is from Dieselsite. I'm not complaining about the filter, I would reccomend it to anyone that asks, it's just that I have singled it out as the cause of the slow warm-up times. Closing the valves (I'm glad I got them when I got the kit) fixes the warm-up issue, so I'm happy.
